At Kilmac, we're committed to investing in future talent and providing meaningful opportunities for young people to gain real industry experience. This summer, we welcomed Rebecca, a Business Management student at the University of Dundee, for an eight-week internship within our Social Value and Marketing team.
Designed to provide hands-on experience across community engagement, marketing and social value, the placement gave Rebecca the opportunity to experience first-hand how these functions support the successful delivery of major civil engineering projects.
Rather than spending her summer behind a desk, Rebecca was immersed in a wide variety of activities. She supported community engagement projects, attended industry events, visited live construction sites, worked alongside project teams, assisted with careers and education initiatives, and contributed to marketing campaigns and company communications. She also represented Kilmac at events across Fife, Dundee and Perth, including the Perth Show, helping to promote careers within construction and engage with local communities.
Throughout the internship, Rebecca worked on a number of meaningful projects that will continue to benefit the business. She contributed to newsletter content, marketing materials, social media campaigns and community engagement activities, while leading an independent project to develop a Social Value Toolkit. The toolkit reviews Kilmac's education and employability initiatives against recognised frameworks, providing practical guidance for evidence gathering, impact measurement and future reporting.
Mentored by Lauren Pratt, Social Value and Marketing Manager, Rebecca developed a strong understanding of how construction businesses create positive social impact alongside delivering high-quality infrastructure.
Lauren Pratt said:
"Our internships are about giving people genuine responsibility and exposure to the industry. Rebecca embraced every opportunity, whether that was engaging with schools, supporting community projects, creating marketing content or attending industry events. She has been a fantastic addition to the team, and we're delighted to have played a part in her professional development."
Reflecting on her placement, Rebecca said:
"This placement has given me so much more than just work experience. It's helped build my confidence, introduced me to some amazing people and given me a real insight into the construction industry. I leave with new skills, lasting memories and a much greater understanding of social value, marketing and community engagement."
Rebecca's internship reflects Kilmac's ongoing commitment to developing future talent and strengthening links between education and industry. By providing meaningful work experience, mentoring and practical opportunities, Kilmac continues to support the next generation of professionals while helping address the future skills needs of the construction sector.
