Kilmac welcomed an ambitious S6 student from Grove Academy as part of our summer placement programme. With a keen interest in finance and economics, the student joined our Commercial Team to gain hands-on experience and insight into Quantity Surveying and business operations.
During the seven-week placement, Rhys was actively involved in both Quantity Surveying and administrative tasks. Key responsibilities included managing the Kilmac contracts admin inbox, organising project photographs onto the server, and receiving an introduction to measurement of contract drawings using a DWF programme.
The placement provided a valuable opportunity to develop a strong understanding of how a construction company operates. Through exposure to various systems and internal processes, the student gained insight into contract documentation and commercial functions—knowledge that will support future academic and career ambitions.
Working closely with Kyle from the Commercial Team, the student received regular support and guidance, enabling them to confidently carry out tasks and learn more about the business. They also praised the welcoming environment, noting how every team member took the time to make them feel like part of Kilmac.
One of the standout moments of the placement was attending a client meeting at the South West Secondary School project site—an exciting opportunity to see the real-world impact of the work undertaken by the Commercial Team. The experience as a whole helped build confidence in a business setting and provided clarity around future career goals.
