From the Ground Up – A New Chapter for Sidlaw View Playpark

Posted on April 8, 2025

Background

Sidlaw View Playpark sits at the heart of two growing communities in Dundee—Birkhill and Muirhead. It forms part of a key pedestrian and cycle route connecting residents to schools, the medical centre, post office, pharmacy, and other local services. It’s also a vital route for children commuting to Birkhill Primary School and is used for cycling proficiency training.

In recent years, the area faced challenges including outdated equipment, flooding, and general wear and tear. Following extreme weather and drainage issues in 2022, the Sidlaw View Residents Association set out a phased improvement plan. While some milestones were achieved, including tarmacked footpaths and mains drainage, the replacement of the playpark remained unfunded and at risk.

Kilmac’s Role

When the project faced funding shortfalls and risk of delay, Kilmac stepped in with a substantial in-kind contribution exceeding £16,000. This support ensured the playpark works could move forward without compromise to scope or quality.

Kilmac’s contribution included:

  • Groundworks and site clearance
  • Supply and installation of key materials
  • Collaboration with Wicksteed to ensure high-quality surfacing and finishes
  • Gates and fencing installation and adjustments

Despite weather delays and a tight timeline, Kilmac completed the works ahead of the community’s planned opening.

Challenges Overcome

  • Flooding: Ground conditions presented initial problems with water retention. Kilmac’s site team acted swiftly to mitigate disruption and maintain progress.
  • Funding Gap: With time-sensitive community expectations and budget constraints, Kilmac’s willingness to donate both labour and materials helped bridge the shortfall and maintain project momentum.

Community Impact

This project is Kilmac’s largest community contribution to date and represents a significant investment in the long-term wellbeing of the local area. The upgraded playpark:

  • Serves as a safe, accessible space for local children and families
  • Supports healthy lifestyles and outdoor activity
  • Enhances the appeal and sustainability of future housing developments in the area

Recognition & Opening

The newly completed playpark was officially opened on Friday 4th April 2025. A plaque recognising Kilmac’s contribution was installed, and the event was attended by Lord Provost of Forfar as well as councillors, local schools, and residents.
