At Kilmac, we’re passionate about giving young people real insight into the construction industry and the diverse career opportunities it offers. During the October school holidays, we welcomed Fraser, a local student, to spend time with our Commercial Department and experience life as a Quantity Surveyor.
Throughout his placement, Fraser shadowed members of our commercial team, learning how a Quantity Surveyor manages the costs of live projects. He was shown how drawings are reviewed and measured to determine material requirements and how financial tracking ensures projects stay within budget.
Reflecting on his time with us, Fraser said:
“During my time in the Quantity Surveying department, I was shown how a QS manages the costs of projects. I was shown how they check over the drawings and use the drawings to measure the materials required. I was also shown how they make sure the project stays within the budget. During this experience I learnt that it’s important to be well organised and to pay great attention to all the details. This experience has given me more of an understanding about construction and all the work related to it, it has also given me more of an idea for what I want to do when I finish school.”
Fraser’s enthusiasm and attention to detail made a great impression on the team. Feedback from staff was excellent, and Kilmac is proud to share that we plan to offer Fraser an apprenticeship opportunity in 2026.
Providing opportunities like this aligns with Kilmac’s ongoing commitment to early careers, education partnerships, and inspiring the next generation to pursue rewarding careers in groundworks and civil engineering.
