As part of Kilmac’s ongoing commitment to developing early talent and offering real-world experience across construction disciplines, we welcomed Findlay, a Business Management student at Heriot-Watt University, to join us for a 12-week summer internship.
Though his academic background is not construction-specific, Findlay quickly demonstrated adaptability, initiative, and a willingness to get hands-on across a range of technical tasks — gaining valuable insight into the groundworks and civil engineering sector.
Week 1–2: Estimating & Design Review
Findlay spent his initial days within the Estimating Department, gaining a solid introduction to:
• Using Design Review software for construction drawings
• Completing take-offs and measures from technical drawings
• Producing accurate quantities for two hard landscaping layouts and a foundation plan
This gave him a useful grounding in project planning and the role of commercial teams in project delivery.
On-Site Learning & Practical Exposure
Under the guidance of our experienced site teams, Findlay supported various activities across live Kilmac sites, including:
• Templehall – Supported the setting out and installation of precast retaining units, observing temporary works procedures and the setting out process
• Hard landscaping – Hands-on experience assisting with mono block prep and installation
• Slab breakout and internal drainage – Assisted with breaking out an existing concrete floor slab, exposing new routes and helping to mark out drainage lines
• Deep drainage tie-in – Shadowed and assisted with a complex 4m-deep drainage installation in a live delivery yard, gaining exposure to trench boxes, health & safety, and temporary works
• Membrane practice – Will also undertake membrane installation training around shutters and columns at Kilmac’s yard to develop his awareness of waterproofing processes
Outcome
Findlay has shown strong capability in both technical comprehension and practical involvement. His attention to detail in take-offs and his interest in both the estimating and site engineering sides of the business demonstrate the value of cross-functional internships. He’s gaining well-rounded exposure to both commercial and operational aspects of the industry.
Looking Ahead
This placement has helped Findlay explore the career opportunities that exist outside of traditional business management roles — and demonstrates Kilmac’s commitment to opening doors for students from a range of disciplines through practical, site-based learning.
